No Country run for Stiffs
ERCFA Senior Country Cup Round 1
North Cave 3 – 1 Easington Utd Reserves
THE Eastenders’ poor record in the Senior Country Cup continued at North Cave last Saturday but not before John Clarke’s depleted side had put up a really spirited show against HPL Division 1 opponents.
Deprived of ‘Biff’ McNaught, Darren Dawson, Pasha Brown and Luke Smith, the Stiffs then saw Danny Medforth crocked after barely five minutes and have to eventually be replaced at half-time.
By then the locals were a goal down as Cave, making light of playing into a stiff breeze, led 1-0 thanks to a crisp strike on 20 minutes.
Aside from one half-chance that fell ‘Bezza’ Barnett’s way, the Eastenders had offered little by way of reply and things looked ominous five minutes into the second half when Cave doubled their tally with a goal that appeared yards offside – a fact acknowledged afterwards by the referee.
To their credit, Easington rolled up their sleeves and hit back well. Midway through the half, Adam Metcalf put Darren Thompson away down the right and the latter did superbly, beating two defenders and the goalkeeper to reduce arrears.
Soon afterwards sub Adam Swaby was presented with a golden chance to level matters from Barnett’s pass but, with perhaps too much time on his hands, he fired straight at the keeper.
Cave made the most of their mistake and eventually sealed their passage when a succession of ricochets eventually allowed the scoring of a third in the dying moments.
Afterwards Clarke singled out the industrious Ricky Biglin for an excellent display in midfield. He also nominated Craig Foster and Luke Jeffery for solid performances at the back, while both Adam Swaby and Mike Hooley made welcome returns to action.
North Cave: R Jennings, T Baxter, J Teall, S Ellis, A Plant, I Phillips, M Richardson, R Tomlinson, A Laurence, C Temperton, G Kempson (Subs: M Rooney, A Watson, J Tomlinson)
Easington: S Eldon, L Jeffery, A Metcalf, T McLaughlin (A Swaby), C Foster, D Campbell, D Thompson, R Biglin, D Medforth, A Barnett, J Cousins
Referee: Mr. G. Wilkin
