Viking raid robs Reserves
Easington Utd Reserves 3 – 4 Viking Raiders
IF every County League Premier Division game at Low Farm is as good as this one, then most supporters will go home at least entertained – if not always happy with outcome!
This match against the former Rawcliffe Bridge outfit was an absolute cracker but, unfortunately, was swung the way of the visitors in a poor fifteen minute spell at the start of the second half, when the Vikings were gifted goals to go 4-2 up.
And despite a storming fight back in which Craig Foster came off the bench to first score and then see what looked a perfectly good ‘goal’ ruled out, the Stiffs were eventually consigned to their third defeat in four matches.
With Danny Medforth recalled to first team duty, John Clarke gave youngster Tom McLaughlin his chance in midfield – meaning a starting place for five locally raised players aged 16 and under.
The boss also resisted the temptation to thrust the experienced trio of McNaught, Biglin and Foster into the starting eleven, instead keeping faith with those who had played the majority of the previous week’s opening win.
And he was rewarded for this loyalty with a bright start, although the Stiffs were forced to wait 24 minutes for the opening goal; Daniel Campbell firing home from close range after the keeper could only beat out a Jamie Cousins free kick.
The Raiders soon levelled matters but in a first half edged by Easington, Luke Smith could have had a hat-trick. Hitting the post from an acute angle and heading another good opportunity over, Smith then played his part in the locals’ second goal, breaking clear before seeing his shot saved by the keeper, the ball running to Cousins who slotted home for 2-1.
After the Goolesters had turned the game on its head, Foster came off the bench with immediate effect. First he latched onto Smith’s pass to coolly beat the keeper for 3-4; then he saw what appeared a fine headed goal from a throw-in disallowed for a push on the defender behind him and, finally, his goal-bound effort with the last kick of the game bobbled onto an upright before bouncing back into the grateful arms of the keeper with Cousins ready to pounce.
Afterwards, Clarke was full of praise for all fourteen players on show but, in particular, mentioned youngsters McLaughlin and Jeffery as well as Darren Dawson and Adam Metcalf as worthy of particular praise.
Easington: S Eldon, L Jeffery, A Metcalf, P Brown, D Dawson, D Campbell (A McNaught), D Thompson (R Biglin), T McLaughlin, L Smith, A Barnett (C Foster), J Cousins
