First half frailties cost Casuals Leven Members Reserves 5 – 3 Easington Utd Casuals
Despite a stirring second half fight back, Doug Clubley’s new-look Casuals went down to defeat in their league opener at Leven. Trailing 5-0 at half-time, the Casuals stormed back with a brace of goals from debutant Matty Purse and a Dave Clubley strike to reduce arrears. Indeed, had Clubley not passed up two other good opportunities and being denied by the woodwork on another, the locals may well have returned home with the unlikeliest of points. A horrific opening 20 minutes saw the lively front two of Leven fire their side into a three-goal lead. But having clawed their way back into the game with some fine football, the Casuals were then caught twice on the counter in the closing minutes of the half as Leven went nap. Still, manager Clubley took plenty of positives from the game. In contrast to the youthful promise of the aforementioned Purse and fellow teenager Rich Clubley, there was an excellent debut from goalkeeper Ian Thurkettle (“it could have been ten first half had it not been for him”) while the returning Dave Hurren looked a picture of composure at right back – “it’s like he’s never been away” said Clubley! With the squad set to be bolstered in future weeks, the only downer for Clubley – besides the result of course – was a worrying injury to teenage defender Brett Fisk.
