Stiffs hopes turn to Ashes at Howden
Howden Amateurs 5 – 1 Easington Utd Reserves
There were no excuses from manager John Clarke as his team were brutally swept aside by the County League Senior Cup holders at the aptly named Ashes Park.
“We were simply behind the pace all day long” said the boss afterwards. He added, “And although there was slight improvement in the second half, we lacked bite all day”.
The defeat was compounded by a late injury to Chris Rawlings that resulted in the Stiffs playing out the last ten minutes with ten men.
And things could have been even worse. Aided by some very suspect defending and goalkeeping, Howden raced into a 3-0 lead inside ten minutes, before also contriving to miss twice from the penalty spot; the first thanks to a Rawlings save, the second being drilled wide.
Coming into the game on the back of an encouraging display at Boothferry, Easington were almost unrecognisable from the side on duty that day. In an awful first half, ‘Bezza’ Barnett passed up their only clear chance as Howden threatened to run amok at the other end.
Their sole reply came courtesy of Luke Smith’s second half goal, which made it 4-1, the youngster racing through to score after fellow sub Glenn Ratcliffe had created the chance.
Clarke singled out Craig Foster as ‘man of the match’ in an otherwise totally forgettable performance. Meanwhile, on this evidence, the anticipated surplus of HPL squad members cannot come soon enough.
Easington: C Rawlings, L Jeffery, M Hooley, P Brown, C Foster, D Campbell, M Thurkettle (T McLaughlin), D Dawson, D Thompson (L Smith), A Barnett (G Ratcliffe), J Cousins
