Graham holds nerve to edge Easington through
Easington United 1 – 0 North Ferriby Utd Res
ANDY Graham’s 76th minute penalty proved just enough to take Easington United through to the second round of the league cup last Saturday.
The Eastenders’ stand-in skipper calmly slotted home his third spot kick of the season to decide a game that had appeared to be heading for extra-time.
Both sides were somewhat different to those that had fought out an entertaining 3-3 league draw at Low Farm three weeks’ earlier.
There was no Harrod, Hunt or Musgrove in the Easington line-up, while the visitors had lost Widdowson, Griffin and Smethurst to first team call-ups at Church Road.
Darren France’s team did, however, still include Andy Taylor – scorer of a hat-trick in the aforementioned 3-3 draw.
As in previous weeks, the Eastenders began brightly and lovely footwork by Thurkettle opened up a chance for Jackman on 9mins, only for the striker to screw his shot wide.
A minute later Jackman turned provider with a peach of a cross from the right that the arriving Batch could only glance wide from six yards out.
A speculative Jackman effort from 25 yards failed to trouble Powley before Ferriby had their first real opening on 20mins; a defensive mix-up giving Alex Reveley sight of goal but he sliced wide.
In the 29th minute Easington came the closest yet. Senior’s free kick was returned into the box by Batch, Nicholson’s effort was only half-cleared to Thurkettle and his rasping goal-bound strike was somehow blocked on the line.
Just a minute later, the alert Appleyard prevented Reveley giving the visitors the lead.
Within the next ten minutes, the Eastenders completely dominated events to such an effect that their visitors rarely crossed halfway.
First Barrow volleyed over from a half-cleared corner, then the lively winger’s great run teed up a chance for Thurkettle whose shot was beaten out by Powley, the Ferriby keeper then springing to his feet to produce a magnificent follow-up save to deny Jackman.
Just before half-time a corner found Batch at the far post, his clever pull-down and sharply struck volley swerved agonisingly wide of the near upright.
Having dominated the first 45 minutes, the hosts almost fell behind right on half-time when referee Barrett controversially deemed Graham guilty of handball just outside the box; Taylor’s free kick struck the post with Appleyard beaten.
The second half proved to be a much more even affair. The visitors opened in a more positive manner and after Powley had again saved from Jackman, Taylor missed a great chance to break the deadlock when firing wide with the goal at his mercy.
On 57mins, Powley produced his third great save of the game, getting down late to divert Nicholson’s goal-bound volley after Thurkettle’s lovely flick from a Senior throw-in had created the chance.
This was the last real goalmouth action of note prior to the penalty. Easington did force numerous corners – again to no end result – while the back four of Campbell, Milner, Graham and Senior dealt fairly ably with Ferriby’s fast counters.
The penalty award came from a rather innocuous looking incident; John Atkinson illegally preventing Graham from latching on to another Senior free-kick.
Manager Mack almost immediately replaced the hard-working Senior and Thurkettle with Smalley and Medforth, and switched to a five-man midfield as Ferriby threw three up top.
The switch almost paid off immediately as Smalley stretched the visitors down the right before picking out Barrow at the near post but the latter volleyed high when it appeared easier to head.
That was Easington’s last opening as Ferriby staged a grandstand finish. But when Appleyard expertly denied Reveley again and Smalley cleared a last minute effort off the line, the home side could celebrate safe passage through…just!
Easington: K Appleyard, C Senior (C Smalley, 80), S Campbell, D Potts, K Milner, A Graham, I Barrow, J Batch, G Thurkettle (D Medforth, 80), P Jackman, M Nicholson (Subs not used: D Walmsley, A Metcalf)
Ferriby: G Powley, L Brigham (C Garth, 77), C Evans, R Levsley, J Atkinson, B Clement, D Moon, M Bloor, A Reveley, A Taylor, A Wilberforce (S Lyall)
Referee: Mr. S. J. Barrett (Hull)
