Second spot of success for Stiffs
Barney Moverley Memorial Trophy
Easington Utd Res 2 – 2 Roos AFC
(Easington win 4-2 on pens)
The Eastenders Reserves clinched their second piece of summer silverware when their calmness from the penalty spot saw off the challenge of Roos in the inaugural Barney Moverley Memorial game.
‘Wingco’, Ratcliffe, Cousins and Brown maintained the locals’ 100% record from shootouts this season, while the upright and a fine Rawlings save ensured victory.
In truth the Eastenders should really have had things wrapped up long before penalty kicks. They passed up numerous quality chances, particularly after the break, and were eventually made to pay for their profligacy as twice Roos came back from a goal down.
Darren Thompson netted both times for Easington, the first after 15mins. But after the same player had twice gone close to extending the lead, Roos wiped it out right on the stroke of half-time when Les Sennett’s 25-yard free-kick took a deflection on its way past Rawlings into the top corner, after Daniel Campbell had appeared to win the ball cleanly in the initial challenge.
The Stiffs started the second half like a train and took the lead just two minutes in. Ratcliffe and Senior combined well on the left side of the box before feeding Thompson who made no mistake from 8 yards out.
Three great chances then came and went for Easington in the next ten minutes before Campbell’s “nothing challenge” on halfway allowed the Roos number 11 to proceed unopposed and steer the ball wide of Rawls for 2-2.
Ratcliffe should have restored the locals’ lead but his miss was then replicated by at least half-a-dozen others as the Roos goal led a charmed life up until the point referee Nicholson decided enough was enough.
In the fading light, Sue White, chairperson of match sponsors Easington Youth Club Management Committee presented the trophy to Daniel Campbell and our thanks go to the aforementioned Committee, Barney’s family and Roos AFC for helping stage what it’s hoped will be an annual event.
Easington: Rawlings, Fisk, Hooley, Brown, Gloucester, D Campbell, M Thurkettle, R Biglin, Ratcliffe, Thompson, J Cousins
SUBS: Senior (for Thurkettle, 46), Jeffery (for Fisk, 46), Findley (for Brown, 60), Thurkettle (for Cousins, 78)
Referee: Mr. J. S. Nicholson
