Flat-footed Easington escape with a point
Easington United 3 – 3 North Ferriby Utd Reserves
EASTENDERS boss Dave Mackay-Dundas was left disappointed with his side’s defensive showing on Saturday as the locals surrendered more home points in their Humber Premier League campaign.
He said, “I thought the players appeared flat beforehand for some reason and their first half performance showed that. Defensively we were all over the place and the only consolation was that we always looked like scoring ourselves at the other end.”
With Omar Camara missing from the midweek side and Dave Walmsley carrying a knock, the Eastenders welcomed Tony Hunt back from injury, while teenage duo Tom McLaughlin and Luke Jeffery joined fellow youngster Jamie Cousins on the bench.
Thanks to Mike Nicholson passing a late fitness test, Easington started with the same eleven that had opened up against Hessle.
And it appeared they were going to build on that solid midweek victory when Andy Graham got up at the far post to head home a Craig Smalley free-kick after just 4mins.
However, the warning signs were there fifteen minutes later when the prolific Alex Reverley (an Easington target last season) cut inside and fired over the top from 20 yards.
Within three minutes Ferriby led 2-1. Both goals were caused by a flat-footed back four failing to react to balls down the channels and twice Andy Taylor was the benefactor. First he advanced unopposed into the box before firing low across Appleyard; then he dispossessed Graham and poked the ball underneath the keeper for the second.
Easington were level on 27mins, Stu Campbell heading home a Graham free-kick, with Powley obstructed by a team mate in his attempt to clear.
Within a minute Gavin Thurkettle almost put the locals ahead, his 25-yard effort being touched wide by Powley after Jackman and Nicholson had forged the opening.
Graham then headed wide from another Thurkettle corner as set-pieces continued to be the hosts’ most obvious route to goal.
But on 35mins Ferriby regained the advantage. Reverley put Craig Smethurst in on the left and his low cross was converted by Taylor for a well-taken hat-trick.
The first half scoring wasn’t over yet, though, and five minutes before the break Easington levelled again; another Smalley free-kick whipped into the near post where Thurkettle dived full length to glance the ball home.
If it was predictable that both defences would tighten up after the break, the locals will still feel disappointed they didn’t clinch maximum points given their dominance in terms of territory and possession.
After Appleyard had denied Adam Wilberforce and Reverley had fired wide at the start of the second period, Easington forced their opponents onto the back foot with a succession of six corners in a row; all to no avail.
In addition, Steve Harrod made an immediate impact on replacing Ollie Musgrove, cleverly putting Nicholson through but the midfielder’s weak shot failed to trouble Powley.
On 74mins Harrod almost scored the decisive fourth himself but, having played a neat one-two with Jackman, he just couldn’t get enough on his lob to beat the keeper.
When John Batch then returned another corner to the back stick and Graham’s header was denied by Powley, the last clear-cut opportunity for either side had gone.
Both teams strove hard for a late winner but neither keeper was really troubled as defenders at last learnt from their first half errors.
