‘Batched-up’ Eastenders do enough
Easington United 3 – 0 Hessle Rangers
WITHOUT ever reaching the level of performance shown against Westella, Easington United gained their first win of the HPL season against a spirited Hessle Rangers side.
With Tony Hunt and Kevin Milner both ruled out by injury, Dave Mack had most spectators at Low Farm struggling to name his Number 5 after handing a debut to John Batch.
A player tracked by the manager for several weeks, the 24-year-old former Barton Town man came in to partner skipper Andy Graham with Adam Metcalf retaining his place at left back.
Elsewhere, youngster Jamie Cousins earned a place on the bench where he was joined by Steve Harrod, making an unexpectedly early return from injury.
Hessle arrived having suffered the pre-season loss of seven players and a 2-4 defeat at Hornsea.
However, they played some attractive football and in Scott Wilson possessed an obvious danger man.
The first chance, however, fell to the home side on 3mins when Graham headed over the first of several quality Thurkettle corner kicks.
Two minutes later Thurkettle himself should have opened the scoring. Latching onto Stu Campbell’s ball, he turned his marker inside out but then lifted his shot over the top with keeper Wilkin stranded.
The aforementioned Wilson then headed wide for Hessle and Campbell did likewise for Easington from another excellent Thurkettle delivery.
On 18mins Easington scored. Great work by Ian Barrow on the right culminated in a shot that Wilkin could only parry into the path of Thurkettle who this time made no mistake.
Wilson again went close as Hessle looked for an immediate response before Phil Jackman linked well with Mike Nicholson only to lash his shot wide.
Campbell passed up another chance from a Thurkettle corner but then drilled home the Eastenders’ second goal ten minutes later, after Barrow’s cross had come to him via Jackman.
The visitors could feel slightly aggrieved at the margin of the arrears at the break and they started the second half strongly.
However, on 57mins Easington made the game safe; Jackman seizing on a defensive slip to race through and coolly slot home before celebrating in front of the Farm Faithful.
The game now drifted to a somewhat benign close. Omar Camara gained half-an-hour’s further acclimatisation to the English game and cleverly set up Harrod whose shot was well saved by Wilkin.
Meanwhile, Cousins was given his HPL debut for the last ten minutes and showed an awareness that will stand him in good stead for the future.
Skipper Graham produced a fine goal-line clearance to preserve the three-goal lead near the end, while Metcalf was unlucky to see his 30-yard fizzer skid just the wrong side of the post.
Thanks to match sponsors Brummitt Animal Health for their continued support. The winning ‘Golden Goal’ time was 18mins.
