Stiffs storm back to rock Robin
Prior to the senior squad’s demolition of Desford, John Clarke saw his youthful second-string storm back from three goals down to dispose of County League newcomers Robin.
The former M K Pine outfit had kindly agreed to step in at short notice after Desford’s reserve team withdrew from the one o’clock fixture and, for the first 35mins of a game played in sweltering conditions, it looked an excellent decision on the visitors’ part.
Taking advantage of some sloppy defensive work all over the park by their hosts, the Hull side raced into a 3-0 lead courtesy of goals after 16, 25 and 28mins.
Thankfully, fine work and acute angle finish by ‘Bezza’ Barnett threw the Eastenders a lifeline before the break.
Indeed, the quality of their football in the 15-minute spell leading up to half-time warranted more goals but both Barnett and Jamie Cousins were denied.
The second half saw more of the same with Mark Thurkettle firing straight at the goalkeeper when there were perhaps better options inside him.
However, Easington turned the game on its head with three goals in four minutes.
First, Luke Smith picked himself up following a push in the box to convert a penalty on 52mins.
A minute later Barnett smacked home a cracking second for 3-3. Then on 54mins the turnaround was complete when "Bezza" pounced on a poor back pass to slot home his third and his side's fourth.
Memories of the recent St Andrews twelve-goal thriller came to mind when Robin levelled matters with a close range finish on the hour.
But this time Clarke’s young side were not to e denied. Cousins thumped home a 25-yard shot to regain the lead 16 minutes from time. And on 85mins the game was sealed when Dave Clubley applied a quality finish from six yards out following more neat approach play.
Easington: C Rawlings, B Fisk, D Campbell, C Foster, M Hooley, J Cousins, D Dawson, T McLaughlin, P Brown, A Barnett, D Clubley
SUBS: M Thurkettle (for Dawson, 35), L Smith (for Clubley, 35), Dawson (for Brown, 55), Brown (for Foster, 65), Clubley (for Barnett, 70)
Referee: Mr. S Stevenson (Beverley)
Att: 41
