Jackman’s gem clinches Easington win
THE Eastenders’ pre-season preparations continued last Thursday with a hard-fought win over Humber Premier League Division 1 side Brandesburton at Catwick Lane.
A tight game in which both sides held the lead was eventually settled by a goal of the highest quality from Phil Jackman – “the best goal I’ve ever seen in amateur football” according to fellow striker Steve Harrod.
Just three minutes were left on the clock when Chris Senior sent a long diagonal ball forward in search of Gavin Thurkettle, only to see the goalkeeper get there first. However, when the ball was cleared only as far as the edge of the penalty box, Jackman took it on his chest and swivelled superbly before striking a stunning overhead kick into the top corner.
The winner was somewhat at odds with the rest of the game, although manager Dave Mack can take satisfaction from all three goals scored by the locals.
However, he wasn’t so pleased with the manner of the two conceded. The first of these came on 10mins, a long ball finding the Eastenders’ offside trap wanting and Stuart Campbell was out-muscled by the Brandes striker who lofted the ball over Rawlings for 1-0.
Campbell was earning his first start of the pre-season for The Mack’s “first choice” squad. He did so as part of a makeshift back four in which he partnered Danny Medforth in place of absent duo Tony Hunt and Andy Graham.
Elsewhere, the recent loss of Rutter and unavailability of Walmsley, Musgrove, Spinks and Wilkinson meant call-ups for Adam Metcalf and Omar Camara in a thinned-out 14-man squad.
Once again the manager used the availability of three out-and-out strikers in half hour spells, with each combination showing increasingly promising signs.
However, it was Ian Barrow who netted first to level matters on 25mins, Kevin Milner’s ball from the left eluding Jackman but finding Barrow unopposed at the far post; neat control and a cool finish did the rest.
Harrod then went close to giving Easington the lead, striking the inside of the post from eighteen yards out after the goalkeeper had blocked Thurkettle’s drilled free kick.
Easington did go ahead eight minutes before the break; a Campbell free-kick on halfway picking out Thurkettle’s clever run across the box and the diminutive striker plucked the ball brilliantly out of the air before sliding it home.
While the Mack was understandably delighted with his side’s forward play, some of the uncertainty at the back didn’t make for pleasant viewing. And Brandes’ equaliser was a case in point.
On 70mins an in-swinging free kick from the halfway line appeared to have dropped out of play at the far post but with the locals’ defence stood waiting, it was knocked back across goal and headed home from six yards out. “Shocking” was the manager’s verdict!
When Jackman then cut inside and fired narrowly wide from 25 yards, Chris Senior’s header was turned round the post and Campbell headed over at a corner, the Eastenders must have thought their chance had gone. Then up stepped Jackman.
