‘Plum’ strike seals City success
HULL City manager Phil Parkinson was at Low Farm last Friday to watch the young Tigers pushed all the way before recording a 3-1 victory over Dave Mack’s improving Eastenders.
On another glorious summer’s evening, the sizeable crowd was treated to some quality football by both teams in an absorbing contest, which was eventually settled by a strike of exceptional quality.
There was a surprise in store for the home supporters when manager Mack included the returning Paul Wilkinson in his 16-man squad.
Elsewhere, Chris Rawlings replaced absent goalkeeper Appleyard, Danny Medforth gained a start in place of the injured Rutter and asst-mgr Dave Walmsley came in for Senior.
The Tigers arrived fresh from a week’s training with the Marines and on the back of a comfortable 4-0 win at Hutton Cranswick. However they were soon put on the back foot by an eager home side.
From the start they gave their opponents little time and looked to dictate the pace of the game.
In a half of few chances, Easington went desperately close on 13mins when Mike Nicholson’s corner was stabbed on by Andy Graham to Ian Barrow who fired against the base of the upright.
But having had plenty of the ball, the Eastenders were made to pay for not doing more with it when City broke swiftly and Bill Law finished coolly.
Within two minutes Easington were level. Harrod was fouled in the box and skipper Graham stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.
Having regained the initiative, Easington could so easily have taken the lead but Tom Woodhead got down well to save the busy Barrow’s close range shot.
The Mack switched to a 3-5-2 formation at the interval, introducing subs Jackman, Wilkinson, Musgrove and Spinks.
But it was the Tigers who stepped up a notch and they took the lead eleven minutes in when Will Atkinson punished some sloppy defensive work.
Moments later, the impressive Nicky Featherstone was only denied by a “one for the camera” save from Rawlings but City gave themselves breathing space on 70mins; Matthew Plummer striking home superbly from 35 yards.
Easington continued to push their opponents hard and Graham flashed a third good heading opportunity wide from a Spinks corner.
Two minutes from time the Eastenders had their last real chance to stage a grandstand finish, but after Wilkinson missed a presentable heading chance and Craig Smalley’s shot took a wicked deflection, Walmsley headed straight at Woodhead from the ensuing melee.
