Holderness Advertiser 3rd July
After over a year in the planning, Easington United AFC held their “Diamond Celebration” event at the Country Park Inn on Hessle Foreshore last Saturday.
Over 270 guests in the Shoreline Suite enjoyed an excellent night’s entertainment headed up by a superb speech from “Big Jack” Charlton OBE. The England ’66 World Cup legend kept his audience entertained with humorous tales about his times with l**ds United, England and the Republic of Ireland. Excellent support on the night came from ‘MC’ Malcolm Lord, while Eastenders general manager Richard Lusmore whistled through sixty years of Easington football history before introducing the night’s special awards. These consisted of loyal service presentations to chairman Doug Clubley (45 years), secretary Judy Sugden (40 years) and vice-chairman Mike Wilson (34 years, 24 as first team manager), followed by presentations to the Club’s record-holders. They included John Clarke (most appearances – 629), Iain McNaught (over 600 appearances), Gordon Keyworth (most consecutive appearances – 176) (accepted on his behalf by his brother Terry), Geoff Keyworth (most league goals in a season – 60 & most goals in a single league game – 7) and Craig Foster (most goals – 415 & most goals in a single game – 8). The final award, the “Committee Award” for services to the Club in 2006/07, went to Daniel Campbell in recognition of his ongoing work in the development field.
Further presentations were made to the Club’s major sponsors and the night also saw an auction and raffle with a disco bringing proceedings to a close.
The total amount raised by the Event is predicted to be over £3,000 and the Eastenders Management Committee would like to thank all who contributed to such a successful night.
Holderness Gazette 4th July
Diamond Celebration proves huge hit!
Easington United Association Football Club has enjoyed some memorable moments in recent times, particularly on the field of play where it has emerged from the shadows to become one of the leading amateur lights in the East Riding. However, it’s hard to see how the satisfaction induced by any of those on-the-field triumphs could have been greater than that felt at the success of the Diamond Celebration Event held last Saturday night.
Some 270 guests gathered in The Shoreline Suite of the Country Park Inn, Hessle to celebrate sixty years of the small village club – it was a figure that even left guest speaker Jack Charlton OBE aghast. “You must be semi-professional?” he asked vice chairman Mike Wilson over the starters – you can guess where Mr. Wilson’s soup went as he tried to answer!
Among those gathered in attendance were the invited guests from the ERCFA, Humber Premier League, ER County League and local rivals Withernsea AFC, as well as Hull City legend Ken Wagstaff, ‘local lad made good’ Stuart Gray (now manager of Northampton Town) and a host of Eastenders from the past six decades including several who had travelled far to be at the event; none more so than Jason Mitchell, in from Austria to mark the anniversary (see Footnote).
Softened up by ‘Master of Ceremonies’ Malcolm Lord, who left few untouched by a brilliant performance, the audience were then treated to an entertaining speech by “Big Jack” in which he recounted many stories of his time with England, l**ds United and as manager of the Republic of Ireland national side.
The 1966 World Cup winner also proceeded to present the evening’s special awards, which were introduced by Richard Lusmore. Running through some of the major personalities of the past sixty years, the Eastenders general manager announced long-service awards to chairman Doug Clubley (45 years), secretary Judy Sugden (40 years) and the aforementioned Mike Wilson (34 years) the latter award doubled-up with recognition of his 24 years as first team manager.
The Club’s record holders were then asked to step forward: John Clarke and Iain McNaught who now both boast appearance figures beyond the 600 mark; Terry Keyworth (in for absent brother Gordon) to mark 176 consecutive appearances for the Club between 1976 and 1981; Geoff Keyworth for 60 league goals in a season and 7 in a single league game; and Craig Foster for 415 goals for the Eastenders and 8 in a single game.
Daniel Campbell then stepped up to receive the Committee Award for Services to the Club in 2006/07 before presentations were made to the Eastenders’ major backers during the season: Harrison Solway Logistics Ltd, Deborah Services Ltd, ABB Ltd, BP Exploration and Technostics Ltd.
A very successful auction then realised over £1,250 for Club funds, which combined with the income from the raffle, “silly game” and other item sales looks like producing a clear profit of some £3,500. Once confirmed, this figure will put the icing on the cake of a brilliant occasion.
The Management Committee of Easington would like to thank the Diamond Celebration sub-committee – Judy, Christine, Craig & Carron, Neil & Angie – for their excellent work over the past year and, in particular, during the sometimes “stressful” days leading up to the Event!
In turn, the Sub-Committee would like to echo the thanks read out by Richard Lusmore on the night: to Jack Charlton and Malcolm Lord; the sponsors who bought “Corporate Tables” for the Event – BP Exploration, Harris Property Services, Kape Electrical, G. R. D. Engineering Ltd, Harrison Solway Logistics Ltd, ABB Ltd and the East Riding County FA; Jason & staff at The Country Park for the wonderful fayre, Andrea Riby at “…And All Things Nice” for the fantastic décor. In addition, thanks to Rich Acklam and Kevin Stabler Photography; all the professional clubs, bodies and individuals who donated prizes for the auction and raffle; all who have supported the various fund-raising activities held over the year ahead of the event; and last but not least those of you who combined to make the Event itself such a huge success by your attendance and participation on the night.
Our web site displays a quote from a Holderness Gazette reporter of March 1965 which says, “Easington is the home to real Yorkshire philosophy and humour”. Saturday night again showed the author of that particular quote to have been a very perceptive individual. And as was said on the night, Easington United have come a very long way in sixty years and particularly over the past twenty. Looking at some of the younger faces around the room in the Country Park, they could have a fair bit more travelling to do. Here’s to the next sixty years…
