THE focal point of Easington United AFC’s Sixtieth Anniversary takes place on Saturday with the Eastenders’ Diamond Celebration Event at the Country Park Inn, Hessle.
England 1966 World Cup legend Jack Charlton OBE is the guest speaker with the popular Malcolm Lord acting as ‘MC’. In addition, the Event features a four-course meal, quality raffle and the auction of several items, including signed shirts from Hull City and Hull Kingston Rovers, along with memorabilia signed by Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher and the England Ladies National side.
Principal Guests include Chris Bodsworth, John Breckon and Rob Lester, representing the East Riding County FA, the ER County League and the Humber Premier League, while Withernsea-born Northampton Town boss Stuart Gray is also among an anticipated audience of some 270, which includes a host of players past and present.
The Diamond Celebration is the highlight in a series of events stretching right back to last July when Hull City Juniors and Unibond League side North Ferriby United kicked off pre-season friendly fixtures at Low Farm. Other events to mark ‘Sixty Years of The Eastenders’ have included “Race Nights” and the “Bridge Too Far” Boxing Day Walk from Easington to the Humber Bridge, while a book charting the history of the Club is set to appear before the year end.
Fittingly, Hull City will help round-off the year-long celebrations, following confirmation that Billy Russell’s title-winning Juniors squad will again play the Eastenders at Low Farm on Friday, 3 August. It is hoped this will coincide with the climax of the School-Club Link Programme sessions involving Easington United and Easington CE (VC) Primary School.
Although the 2006/07 season was by no means the most successful on the field of play, the prestige of having a figure such as “Big Jack” Charlton present at the Event this weekend should ensure that Easington’s sixtieth year as a football club proves an unforgettable one.

AFTER what seems like an eternity in the planning, the pinnacle of Easington United AFC’s Sixtieth Anniversary festivities finally take place this Saturday with the Diamond Celebration Event at The Country Park Inn, Hessle.

Fittingly, Hull City will help round-off the year-long celebrations, following the confirmation that Billy Russell’s title-winning Juniors squad will play the Eastenders at Low Farm on Friday, 3 August. This is being timed to coincide with the climax of the current School-Club Link Programme involving Easington United and Easington CE (VC) Primary School.
The Club’s General Manager, Richard Lusmore, is keen to praise the efforts of the six-strong Diamond Celebration sub-committee set up to oversee the planning of the year-long celebrations – Judy Sugden, Christine Ward, Craig Foster, Neil & Angie Rutter and Carron Windas. He said, “As with any of these things there have been hiccups along the way but I can’t thank the Sub-Committee enough for the excellent work they’ve put in. It looks like we’re going to have a great night and provide a fitting way with which to celebrate sixty years of the Eastenders.”
Saturday’s Event is the second time that Easington have been honoured by having a World Cup winner as a guest; ten years ago Nobby Stiles was guest speaker at the Golden Jubilee Dinner at Willerby.
Principal Guests among an anticipated audience of some 280 at the Country Park include representatives of the East Riding County FA, the ER County League and the Humber Premier League. Hull City legend Ken Wagstaff and Withernsea-born Northampton Town boss Stuart Gray are also scheduled to be in attendance, along with representatives from local sides Hedon Rangers, Hedon United, Withernsea and Roos and several corporate groups representing some of the Club’s major sponsors.
Among the vast number of past and present Easington members attending are Arthur Piggott and Tom Robinson, whose connection stretches back to the days of the South Holderness League. There are several familiar names from the Sixties as well as many players from the promotion-winning side of the Seventies, including “record breakers” Geoff Keyworth (60 league goals in 1975/76) and his brother Gordon (176 consecutive appearances between 1979 and 1981). Not surprisingly many others in attendance began their connection with Easington under the stewardship of Mike Wilson; among them past captains Neil Huntley, Sean McLaughlin and Iain McNaught; the latter being just one of a core of players still playing regularly some twenty years on from their first appearances under “The Bo”. The bulk of the current Eastenders squads complete the rump of the evening’s attendance.
Although the 2006/07 season was by no means the most successful on the field of play, the prestige of having a figure such as “Big Jack” Charlton headlining Saturday’s Event should ensure that Easington’s sixtieth year as a football club proves an unforgettable one.
