EASINGTON United completed their 2006/07 Humber Premier League campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win at local rivals Withernsea.
Although – as with the recent meeting at Low Farm – controversy surrounded several key decisions, the Eastenders passed up so many chances that the home side could have few qualms about the overall result.
Withernsea were aggrieved at the award of both first half penalties, from which Andy Graham gave Easington a two-goal cushion, and the referee’s overruling of his assistant, which allowed Mike Nicholson to virtually wrap things up at 3-0 midway through the second half. James Gell headed home the Seasiders’ consolation a minute from time.
However, given more assurance in front of goal, the aforementioned Nicholson could have had things settled by half-time. Six times in the first half the Eastenders’ leading goal scorer found himself with the goal at his mercy, only to be denied three times by Seasiders’ goalkeeper Phil Richardson, once by a deflection off a defender and on the other two by wayward finishes.
Darren Thompson and Steve Harrod also found their radar wanting in a very one-sided first period. The second half proved a more even, if scrappier, affair although Dave Mackay-Dundas’ side never looked like losing their grip on proceedings.
The result leaves Easington looking likely to finish either sixth or seventh in the Premier Division table. Next up for them is defence of the South Holderness Cup, which begins next week against Hedon United at the Preliminary Round stage.
