ANDY Graham’s 76th minute penalty proved just enough to take Easington United through to the second round of the Grays HPL Cup at the expense of North Ferriby United Reserves.
The Eastenders stand-in skipper picked himself up from John Atkinson’s foul to calmly slot his spot kick past goalkeeper Glen Powley.
Easington just about deserved the win, if only for a dominant first half in which chances again seemed to come and go. The aforementioned Powley made three excellent stops to deny Thurkettle, Jackman and Nicholson, while several other efforts flew narrowly wide.
Andy Taylor hit the upright for the visitors on the stroke of half time and only Craig Smalley’s injury-time goal-line clearance prevented them taking the tie to extra-time.
The game brought to an end Ferriby’s unbeaten start and the Eastenders’ run of successive Saturday home fixtures.
They return to league action with back-to-back trips to Hutton Cranswick and Pocklington before welcoming champions Reckitts to Low Farm on 7 October.
Manager Dave Mackay-Dundas has some welcome selection posers ahead of the Cranswick trip. With Steve Harrod, Tony Hunt and Ollie Musgrove all expected to be back this weekend, the boss should at last have an abundance of resources.
If this is the case, reserve team boss John Clarke could certainly welcome anybody surplus to requirements, following his team’s dismal showing in a 5-1 defeat at Howden Amateurs.
Meanwhile, the Eastenders third-string, the Casuals, belatedly begin their County League Division 4 campaign this Saturday, away at Leven Members Reserves.

CLUB NOTES
Forthcoming Fixtures / Team News:
The Eastenders face the first of two back-to-back away games when they go to Hutton Cranswick this weekend, scene of a 7-0 embarrassment last time out. Manager Mack should face problems of a pleasant kind as he welcomes back Tony Hunt, Steve Harrod and Ollie Musgrove to the squad.
The Reserves will look to kick-start their season at home to Holme Rovers and manager Clarke will welcome any players surplus to senior squad requirements as both Foster and Hooley are absent. Ricky Biglin, however, should be available again.
And there’s a trio of teams in action on Saturday as the Casuals belatedly begin their campaign in Division 4. Manager Clubley takes his team to Leven Members Reserves.
Other News:
Following consideration at a Disciplinary Meeting, Kevin Appleyard has had his 35-day suspension reduced to 21 days, beginning 2nd October.
Thanks to Holderness Tyre Services Ltd., Burstwick (Tel. 01964 670006) for Saturday’s match sponsorship. Also thanks to all businesses and individuals who have kindly sponsored players in this season’s match programme; virtually the full HPL squad is now covered.
The winning Golden Goal time against North Ferriby was 76mins.
Thanks to everybody who supported last Saturday’s Coffee Morning, which raised £149.00 for club funds.
Finally, a reminder that Saturday week (30th September) sees the Club holding a ‘Race Night’ in The Granby. Our thanks go to Craig Stephenson, Lorna @ The Granby and Brummitt Animal Health who’ve already sponsored races. If you’d like to do so, please ring 01964 650133 ASAP.
