BACK-to-back wins lifted Easington United to joint-top in the Humber Premier League but they were accompanied by contrasting performances.
The second half display in the midweek 4-1 win at Hornsea Town was “our best of the season” according to Eastenders boss Dave Mackay-Dundas.
However, his view of Saturday’s 2-1 success over Beverley Town was somewhat different. He said, “We’ve won today but we’ve been woeful!”
A Mike Nicholson brace helped Easington to their midweek victory, with the other goals coming from John Batch and Ian Barrow, in a game in which Steve Harrod was outstanding in his first start for the club.
But both Nicholson and Harrod were forced off with injuries on Saturday and Beverley held an interval lead thanks to Rich Metcalf’s 16th minute goal, in a match dominated by strong winds and sporadic rain,
A slightly improved showing after the break was rewarded with two Andy Graham penalties, in the 58th and 65th minutes, to take Easington level on points with North Ferriby United Reserves but with a single goal inferior difference.
The Eastenders entertain Bridlington Town Reserves at Low Farm this Saturday (2.00pm) with the aforementioned Harrod and Craig Smalley both doubtful but Nicholson hopeful of being fit.
Adam Metcalf, Dan Potts and Danny Medforth are all back from holiday, which could leave John Clarke with a strong Reserves squad for the opening ER County League Premier Division fixture at Boothferry Rangers.

“Sniffer’s Self-preservation Society”
THE East Riding County League season kicks off this Saturday with Easington United Reserves boss John “Sniffer” Clarke looking to preserve the Premier Division status handed his side somewhat unexpectedly during the summer.
Having finished fourth in Division 1 last term, the Stiffs “benefited” from the election of Long Riston and North Cave into the Humber Premier League and thus joined champions Boothferry Rangers, Holme Rovers and Skidby Millers in the “top-flight”.
“We weren’t really looking to go up”, admits the manager, who observed that results towards the end of last season showed the locals were not quite good enough to gain automatic promotion.
Both he and assistant-manager ‘Biff’ McNaught felt their side could do with another season in Division 1 to really kick-on but, having been promoted, they are determined to give it their best shot and the first team squad strengthening over the summer should have a knock-on effect.
With McNaught sidelined by work commitments, Clarke has single-handedly overseen an encouraging pre-season campaign, which was completed last Wednesday against Roos.
In addition to the core of last season’s squad and several “fringe” members of the HPL side, the boss has given runs to the ex-Juniors who formed part of the Casuals’ exciting end to last season – and all have done well.
So much so that, prior to the Roos game, Clarke admitted to “not having the foggiest” idea what his starting line-up would be at Boothferry Rangers this weekend. At least 20 players have given themselves a chance thanks to their part in a sequence of five pre-season games without defeat.
In addition, there are those deemed surplus to HPL requirements this weekend (which could include the returning duo of Potts and Medforth) while two of last season’s regulars (Adam Swaby and Stew Guy) are yet to kick a ball due to other commitments.
At least the manager has the consolation of knowing that for the first time he goes into a league campaign with selection options rather than worries!
The Casuals begin their campaign in Division 4 in two weeks’ time (23rd).
