GARY Hobson rescued a point for Westella & Willerby in the opening game of the Humber Premier League season at Low Farm.
The former Hull City and Brighton defender curled in a 76th minute free kick to cancel out Ollie Musgrove’s first half opener for an Easington United side that had hitherto looked destined for victory.
The equaliser prompted protests from Eastenders goalkeeper Kevin Appleyard that eventually led to his dismissal but, despite this, it was the home side who looked the more likely winners in the later stages.
Easington manager Dave Mackay-Dundas expressed immense satisfaction at the performance of his depleted squad, although he was naturally disappointed not to have taken all three points.
“When you dominate a team of Westella’s quality for long periods of the game as we did today, I’ve got to be happy. It’s just disappointing that we couldn’t kill the game off at 1-0 and eventually we paid the price.”
The manager singled out skipper Andy Graham as his man of the match although he was keen to praise his full squad for their efforts.
There was special praise also for young Adam Metcalf who enjoyed his first taste of HPL action and grew in confidence as the game wore on.
A recurrence of Tony Hunt’s ankle injury meant he was doubtful for last night’s home game against Hessle Rangers, while holiday means Kevin Milner misses Saturday’s meeting with promoted North Ferriby United Reserves at Low Farm (2.00pm) and next Tuesday’s game at Hornsea Town (6.30pm).
