EASINGTON United begin their Humber Premier League campaign on Saturday when they entertain highly fancied Westella & Willerby (2.00pm). It’s the first of three home games in a week for the Eastenders who will be desperate to improve on last season’s poor form at Low Farm.
At least they come into the match in form. After inflicting a 6-1 drubbing on Leicester & District League champions Desford FC, Easington then secured a much narrower 3-2 win at HPL Division 1 newcomers Long Riston.
Unfortunately, the summer schedule has left manager Dave Mackay-Dundas with a couple of serious injury worries to add to the all-too-familiar problem of early season unavailability.
Having lost skipper Neil Rutter following the opening game against North Ferriby last month, Mackay-Dundas saw striker Steve Harrod damage ankle ligaments at Long Riston. Both players are almost certain to miss the first month’s fixtures.
With Tony Hunt rated as “doubtful”, Dan Potts and Daniel Medforth on holiday, Chris Senior hampered by work commitments and both Chris Spinks and Paul Wilkinson no longer at Low Farm, the Eastenders’ resources are being stretched to the limit for Saturday’s opener and next Tuesday’s match against Hessle Rangers.
The growing absent list potentially leaves the door open for members of John Clarke’s reserve string to force their way in. They get their chance to impress this evening when they entertain their Hedon United counterparts in the annual Melvin Douglas Memorial Trophy game at Low Farm (6.30pm).

Harrod joins Eastenders missing cast list
EASINGTON United begin another Humber Premier League campaign on Saturday with manager Dave Mackay-Dundas having to contend with a familiar problem of early season unavailability.
It’s a situation that was exacerbated last week when striker Steve Harrod damaged ankle ligaments in the 3-2 win at Long Riston and is now very doubtful for the first month’s fixtures.
Harrod joins Mark Chester and Jimmy Neilson on the injury list, while skipper Neil Rutter is still some way off a full return despite making a heartening – and surprising – return to training this week.
In addition, the returning JP Johnson is on an FA coaching course, Tony Hunt is rated as only 50-50 thanks to a niggling Achilles problem and both Stuart Campbell and Ollie Musgrove, though available, have had precious little game-time.
With Dan Potts and Daniel Medforth missing all three August fixtures due to holidays, Chris Senior hampered by work commitments and Hall Road Rangers duo Chris Spinks and Paul Wilkinson no longer at Low Farm, the two Dave’s have seen their squad strength reduced drastically at precisely the wrong time.
Indeed, given the number of absent players, there’s no telling what line-up or even formation the management duo will unveil when The Eastenders kick-off their campaign.
New signing Omar Camara could well be in line for his HPL debut, while other names may have come into the frame following last night’s annual Melvin Douglas Memorial Trophy fixture against Hedon United at Low Farm.
Easington begin their campaign with three successive home games, starting with the visit of many people’s tips Westella & Willerby on Saturday. They are followed to Low Farm by Hessle Rangers next Tuesday (6.30pm) and promoted North Ferriby Utd Reserves on Saturday week.
