Two from Thommo secures Stiffs success
FC Ridings 2 – 4 Easington Utd Reserves
DARREN Thompson struck twice as Easington United Reserves gave themselves a much needed Premier Division lift at bottom club Ridings.
The striker claimed his ninth and tenth league goals of the season to decide matters and earn his side ample revenge for December’s disappointing home reversal.
With manager Clarke having just arrived back from Oz, assistant ‘Biff’ McNaught again took the reins and, despite the influx of Andy Graham, Dan Potts and Mark Richardson from the senior squad, was still faced with the by-now expected shortfall.
In the event Potts – coming back after three weeks’ out with a knee problem – made up the “bench” with young Tom McLaughlin asked to go and bring the Casuals up to a full eleven!
Graham partnered his manager at the back, while Richardson replaced the injured Ricky Biglin in the middle of the park. Combined with experience of Foster up front, it gave the Stiffs the sort of “spine” lacking in several of recent games.
However, buoyed by their win at the Farm, Ridings were “up” for this one and at the end of an even first half, Easington found themselves a goal down and with some work to do to turn things round.
They gained the perfect start to the second half when a fine move involving Barnett and Thompson culminated in Foster side-footing home the equaliser.
This goal appeared to deflate the homesters but the tide turned again when Danny Campbell was adjudged guilty of handball and the resulting penalty was converted for 2-1.
Easington thought they had levelled matters when Richardson released Jeffery and Brown’s conversion of his cross appeared to be over the line before being desperately hacked away.
Still, parity was eventually restored thanks to ‘Bezza’ Barnett’s fine run and shot, before manager McNaught introduced Potts for Campbell and switched to a 3-5-1 formation.
With the replacement shoring things up in the middle, chances started to come thick and fast but it was left to Thompson to secure the points.
A fine strike from 15 yards, after a deflection off a defender had run kindly for him, made it 3-2 before the Stiffs’ top scorer raced onto Foster’s pass to score his second and the Stiffs’ fourth.
Easington: S Eldon, D Campbell (D Potts), B Fisk, P Brown, A McNaught, A Graham, L Jeffery, M Richardson, C Foster, D Thompson, A Barnett
