Holderness Gazette 4th December
CLUB NOTES

The First Team go to Hornsea Town this Saturday seeking to avenge one of their more disappointing performances of the season to date as well as build on back-to-back home wins. Skipper Neil Rutter remains sidelined and is joined this week by the absent Anthony Barnett.

In the County League the Reserves are away at VIP Communications in the Premier Division. Meanwhile at Easington, action is restricted to “The Pitch Across The Ditch” where the Casuals are scheduled to entertain South Cave Utd Reserves in a meeting of the bottom two in Division 4.

Thanks to all who supported last week’s Coffee Morning, which raised £135.00 towards Club Funds.

Training continues at Withernsea High School Sports Hall every Wednesday (8pm-9pm).

Graham's late goal nicks it for Easington
Humber Premier League
Easington United 2 - 1 North Ferriby United Reserves

IF the sign of a good team is grinding out results when not playing well then Easington United supporters could yet be in for a fruitful campaign. For despite a second successive home win, the locals were awful for much of this game.
Poor decision making, an inability to keep the ball, weak tackling and at times a seemingly complete lack of understanding of the tasks required allowed a depleted but useful looking Ferriby side to dominate matters throughout. How the visitors went home empty-handed remains a mystery.
In mitigation this was the Eastenders’ first action for five weeks, they were asked to try out a new system that required several players to move out of their “comfort zones” and their preparations had been hit by the late loss of skipper Neil Rutter following a freak injury suffered at training.
But this Easington side does at least have spirit. For despite being under the cosh for almost the whole ninety minutes, it was they who returned to the warmth of the changing room as winners.
On a typical damp, dark and cold November afternoon, Ferriby set the tone early by immediately forcing their hosts on to the back foot and the opening quarter of an hour was played almost exclusively in the Easington half.
United’s 3-5-2 system soon became 5-3-2 with Jeffery and Frost forced onto the back foot, while the midfield trio of Lenham, Medforth and Havercroft found the early stages passing them by.
Errors were appearing all over the park and one on 15mins allowed Armstrong in on the left to pick out Davison who should really have done better from 12 yards out. A minute later Aaron Wade seized on some weak defending to break clear but Appleyard did well to save.
Having survived two such scares, the Eastenders went up the other end and scored with virtually their first real attack. Havercroft was brought down on the left side of the area and up stepped Medforth to drill his penalty low into the corner past a motionless Rob Moy.
The goal did little to alter the pattern of play although it was the home side who produced the next real chance. After Frost had outstripped a defender and unleashed a stinging shot that Moy failed to hold, the keeper then did brilliantly to deny both Thurkettle and Medforth as they attempted to convert the follow-up.
This moment seemed to inspire Easington to their best passage of play and in the period up to half-time they finally gained some ascendancy. Two minutes before the break Lenham’s quick thinking almost doubled the lead but his clever attempt from thirty yards was narrowly off-target.
However, despite this and Mack’s wise words at the break, it was Ferriby who again started the second half on top. And this time their dominance was rewarded; on the hour mark a free kick delivered into the home box saw the ball bounce off Campbell and Wade picked his spot low inside the near post.
As Mack made changes (including the introduction of Mark Hutchinson for his HPL debut) the visitors continued to threaten and on 74mins they went desperately close when Aldous’s stunning strike thumped against the bar.
Mee’s introduction behind the front two helped galvanise Easington to some extent and on 75mins Farndale brought a good save out of Moy.
But still the visitors looked the likely winners until, with just five minutes left, the Eastenders scored again. Campbell – making his 250th appearance – whipped in a superb free-kick that picked out the late arriving Andy Graham who drilled the ball low past Moy.
After a slightly anxious last few minutes referee Porter blew his full-time whistle and the hardy “Farm Faithful” could heave a huge sigh of relief.

Casuals left fog-bound in Newbald
ER County League Division 4
North Newbald 3 – 0 Easington Utd Casuals

Easington Casuals boss Iain McNaught jetted off to sunnier climes earlier this week leaving behind a side desperately in need of some winter warmth of their own following another deeply disappointing display at the weekend.
With a wet “Pitch Across The Ditch” prompting a switch to their opponents’ South Newbald Road ground, the Casuals started well enough and knocked the ball around confidently. However, they failed to capitalise on some early chances, Dave Clubley going closest following up a tremendous Pete Waddingham shot.
Unfortunately, in line with the gloomy conditions, the visitors’ performance deteriorated leaving Maccer to bemoan: “There were too many poor passes, a distinct lack of confidence throughout the whole side and just not enough effort all round. Frustrating.”
Two goals in quick-fire succession turned the game the hosts’ way and a third in the second half completed a comprehensive 3-0 scoreline. The late dismissal of “Biff” McNaught compounded the Casuals’ misery.
Ironically, up to that point, McNaught was one of the players praised by the manager for his performance, along with the “lively” Waddingham and the hard-working Brown.
Of most disappointment to the boss was the fact that his side probably created more chances than their hosts but “never looked like having the killer touch” whereas Newbald clinically finished the few opportunities they made.
Casuals: Eldon, D Rutter, T Biglin, Dawson, I McNaught, A McNaught, D Clubley (Findley, 70), Turley, R Clubley (Milbank, 65), Waddingham, Brown

Match Preview
Eastenders v North Ferriby Utd Reserves
Low Farm - Kick-Off: 2.00pm

The Eastenders will look to play their first football in five weeks when they entertain North Ferriby United Reserves at Low Farm tomorrow.
Manager Dave Mack returns from holiday looking to somehow kick-on from the workmanlike performance that yielded 3pts against Cleethorpes last time out.
Skipper Neil Rutter is out with a suspected fractured arm and there is a doubt over fellow centre-half Matty Hart who has been struggling with illness during the week.
Elsewhere, Mark Hutchinson is again included in the squad as is the returning Anthony Barnett. Mack will decide tonight whether or not to call up more defensive cover, although Craig Foster will definitely not be one of those considered following recent hospitalisation.
Opponents North Ferriby have also had a hospital stay within the ranks – manager Cosi Basile having been in for a minor operation during the week. His absence has unfortunately meant we have no squad details available for what looks like being another youthful Ferriby line-up.
Despite their lowly league position in the HPL (just one point and two places above bottom club Pocklington) Ferriby are not to be under-estimated. They have already taken a point off leaders Beverley away from home and were praised by both Chalk Lane and Sculcoates for “never giving up” despite defeat to the high-flyers. They also boast a fine record at Low Farm and won last season’s corresponding fixture 3-2.
Given a weather forecast of freezing temperatures and dense fog, all at Low Farm will have fingers crossed that we are not in for yet another postponement tomorrow.
Tomorrow’s match is being sponsored by Easington Village Stores (R. H. Webster & Co).
Easington (from): Appleyard, Jeffery, S Campbell, Medforth, Graham, Hart, Frost, Lenham, Farndale, Thurkettle, Barnett, Havercroft, Mee, Hutchinson
Ferriby: No squad details available

Assistants: Mr. Garry Tindall (Bridlington) / Mr. Mathew Wright (Hornsea)

Match Preview
North Newbald v Casuals
Low Farm - Kick-Off: 2.00pm

Casuals’ manager Iain McNaught has just the one doubt in his squad ahead of the game at North Newbald. Midfielder Pat Feeney fell off a ladder during the week and remains to be confirmed. Should he miss out, either Darren Dawson or Matty Findley looks set to take his place.
Striker Andy Milbank returns to the squad after work commitments (and a shunt into his manager’s car!) had kept him out of the reckoning for a couple of weeks. Pete Waddingham is also back, having been on goalkeeping secondment to the Reserves last week, while Kevin Newsam has returned from the injury he suffered shortly after coming on as a sub against Eastrington a fortnight ago.
The Casuals will be looking for 3pts against another side who’ve enjoyed an inconsistent start to the season. A record of three wins and four defeats from seven games has left Newbald in mid-table. Their erratic form was highlighted recently by a 7-2 league win over Molescroft being followed by a 0-10 cup reverse at Division 5 side Haltemprice Rangers!
Whatever the form of his opponents, however, Maccer knows that his players will have to show a vast improvement on the performance that yielded a point rather fortuitously at home to Eastrington last time out.
One other change tomorrow is likely to come in the shape of the referee, with original appointment Michael Bickerstaffe likely to be replaced given the switch of venue.
Casuals (from): Eldon, A McNaught, T Biglin, D Rutter, I McNaught, Turley, Newsam, D Clubley, Brown, Milbank, R Clubley, Waddingham, Feeney, Dawson, Findley
Referee: TBC

Holderness Gazette 27th November
Eastenders join the “home of Grassroots football”

As part of its ongoing Development Plan, Easington United AFC is delighted to announce the official launch of a new web site on Monday (1st December): www.clubwebsite.co.uk/easingtonunited.
The Eastenders have teamed up with Club Website UK (“The Home of Grassroots Football) to launch the new site, which aims to be “a one-stop shop for club members or players to access all they need to know about their club - fixtures, results, match reports, league tables, club news and information – plus the latest news from the grassroots game across the country”.
As “the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of grassroots players across the UK” Club Website is an “attractive partner for governing bodies and commercial partners alike” – a fact supported by its affiliation to the Welsh Football Trust and the Scottish Youth Football Association and “official partner” status with Umbro UK. Other partners include well-known brands such as Virgin Media and Lucozade as well as football-related bodies, FC Business Magazine and Fair Game. In addition, the organisation already has over 12,000 clubs registered.
Such a tie-in potentially offers sponsors of Easington United AFC far greater exposure than was otherwise ever likely. Therefore, besides being a way of saying thank you to those businesses and individuals whose support has been vital over the past decade or so, the hope is that many more will be attracted by what is a very professional looking set-up.
In launching the new website, the Eastenders Management Committee would like to thank Andy Medcalf for all his invaluable support since the first Eastenders site appeared back in February 2003 (attracting almost 50,000 visitors). The latter will remain “live” for archive purposes for several months, while Andy will also remain an integral part of our support team for the new site and the award-winning match programme.

CLUB NOTES

Snow forced postponement of the First Team’s scheduled meeting with leaders Chalk Lane at Low Farm last Saturday. It is now five weeks since the win against Cleethorpes last time out and returning Manager Mack will be hoping his players can remember and repeat their performance that day if the weather allows this Saturday’s visit of North Ferriby United Reserves to take place. Squad-wise Anthony Barnett could come into contention having been away last week.

Having finally got their first league points at the weekend, Craig Smalley’s Stiffs side could be frustrated by the fixture list this week, following postponement of their scheduled trip to Sculcoates Amateurs Reserves. The Club currently awaits news from the County League of any rearrangements – check the web site for latest developments.

The Casuals were also snowed off last weekend and will hope to return to action at home to North Newbald on Saturday.

Training continues at Withernsea High School Sports Hall every Wednesday (8pm-9pm).
